Chișinău police officer refuses 20,000 lei bribe; Lawyer who made the offer detained

The lawyer of a food transportation company was detained for allegedly attempting to bribe a police officer in Chisinau with 20,000 lei, who subsequently reported him.
The operation was conducted by prosecutors from the Prosecutor's Office for Combating Organized Crime and Special Cases (PCCOCS), in collaboration with officers from the Internal Protection and Anti-Corruption Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
The lawyer was arrested immediately after handing over the money and placed under the authorities' control.
With 20,000 lei, the man allegedly attempted to persuade the police officer not to report the false phytosanitary documents provided by the company representatives for the goods being transported.
The PCCOCS charged the lawyer with active corruption, a crime in the Republic of Moldova that carries a penalty of up to 6 years in prison and a fine ranging from 4,000 to 6,000 conventional units, which is equivalent to 200,000 to 300,000 lei.
If the same acts were committed on a large scale, the penalty may increase to up to 7 years of imprisonment and a fine of 8,000 conventional units, equivalent to 400,000 lei.
