Josep Borell, at the Schuman Forum: We are preparing a civilian mission in the Republic of Moldova to strengthen the country's capacity against hybrid threats

The European Union is currently preparing a civilian mission for the Republic of Moldova with the aim of supporting this country in dealing with hybrid threats, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, said on Tuesday. In a keynote speech at the Schuman Forum for Defense and Security, Borrell spoke about the importance of partnerships in the strategic motto for security and defense of the European Union, giving the example of military operations and missions, but also the EU's civilian missions.

The head of European diplomacy said that the story of security and defense of the European Union began 20 years ago, when the EU carried out its first military operations in the Western Balkans and then in Africa.

"We also want to more systematically apply the 'train and equip' model - not just 'train' - to our civilian missions. This approach has already produced good results in Niger and Somalia. We are currently preparing a new mission in the Republic of Moldova to strengthen the country's ability to counter hybrid threats", added Borrell. At the February meeting of EU foreign ministers, the head of Romanian diplomacy, Bogdan Aurescu, proposed the creation of an EU civilian mission for the Republic of Moldova, the creation of a StratCom center to combat disinformation and the initiation of the process of creating a regime of sanctions against Russia to counter actions of destabilization of the Republic of Moldova.

Later, the European Parliament organized a debate devoted to the security situation in the Republic of Moldova against the backdrop of Russia's destabilization attempts, a political step following which European deputies requested the adoption of a resolution requesting the adoption of EU sanctions against those who destabilize the country .

According to the media from Brussels, the European Union is going to allocate another 40 million euros for the army of the Republic of Moldova, amid revelations about Russia's efforts to overthrow the pro-Western government in Chisinau.

According to the EU Observer, which cites an internal EU memorandum, most of the money will be spent on a "long-range mobile ground-based surveillance radar" to help Moldova control its airspace.
