Kremlin signals Putin's readiness for talks with Macron

The Kremlin has announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin is prepared to hold negotiations with French President Emmanuel Macron regarding the war in Ukraine. This statement was made by Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov during an interview with RIA Novosti.
“The President of Russia has expressed his readiness to engage in dialogue with Macron. Therefore, if there is mutual political will, this can only be viewed positively,” Peskov stated.
Constructive Engagement vs. Moral Lectures
Peskov further noted that potential contact between the two leaders should serve as an attempt to understand mutual positions. He emphasized that such discussions should not devolve into a "moral lecture."
“Putin is always ready to explain his positions in a detailed, sincere, and consistent manner to his interlocutors,” the spokesperson added.
Diplomatic Background and Regional Security
In July, Macron and Putin held their first telephone conversation in three years. The leaders discussed the war in Ukraine, the escalating conflict between Tehran and Tel Aviv, and American strikes on nuclear targets in Iran.
Both parties agreed to maintain contact to coordinate their respective positions regarding the Middle East. On Friday, December 19, Macron advocated for the resumption of contact with Putin, stressing that ending the war in Ukraine is in the interest of both Europeans and Ukrainians.
EU Financial Support for Ukraine
Concurrently, during the Brussels summit, European Union leaders agreed to provide Ukraine with a €90 billion interest-free loan. This funding is intended to cover the national budget deficit and bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
However, the member states failed to reach a consensus regarding the use of frozen Russian assets within the EU to finance this aid package.
