EU accession is the only path for Moldova’s survival, President Sandu declares

President Maia Sandu underscored that the Republic of Moldova can only survive as a free and sovereign democracy by joining the European Union. The head of state delivered this message during the annual meeting of Moldovan ambassadors in Chișinău.
She emphasized that the nation's foreign policy is being forged within a volatile regional context, marked by intensifying hybrid threats and security instability.
Strategic priorities and regional security
The European path remains the absolute priority for Moldova’s domestic and foreign agenda. Sandu called for consistent diplomatic action to promote this strategic objective and urged intensified political dialogue with EU member states.
The President reaffirmed that Romania remains Moldova’s primary strategic partner. Bucharest continues to provide vital support for the country’s European trajectory, energy security, and economic connectivity.
Furthermore, Sandu confirmed unwavering support for Ukraine. She stated that Ukraine’s resilience is "vital for the security of the Republic of Moldova" in the current geopolitical climate.
Expanding global economic horizons
Looking beyond the EU, Moldova aims to deepen bilateral ties with key partners including the United States, Canada, Japan, and the United Kingdom. Economic cooperation remains a priority with partners in the Middle East and China.
The President also announced an expansion of ties within the Caucasus and Central Asia. A significant step in this direction includes the opening of a new Moldovan Embassy in Kazakhstan.
For 2026, the diplomatic corps will focus on attracting foreign investment and mobilizing international support to bolster national security. This includes modernizing consular services to better support the Moldovan diaspora.
A defining moment for the future
"Moldova is at a pivotal turning point," Sandu stated. She warned that actions taken in the coming years will define the nation’s future for decades to come.
The Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Oana-Silvia Țoiu, also attended the summit at the invitation of her counterpart, Mihai Popșoi. Her official visit includes high-level meetings with Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu and President Sandu to further synchronize regional efforts.
