The Republic of Moldova is set to launch the Register of Geographical Names, a digital platform designed to collect, store, and provide official information on geographical names, including those of localities, rivers, plains, and other geographical features. The online portal, rdg.gov.md, is scheduled to be launched in 2026.

According to the Regulation of the information resource formed by the information system Register of Geographical Names, approved on December 23 by the Government, the online platform will allow the preservation of all geographical names, including historical ones; preservation of cultural and geographical identity; prevention of unauthorized changes and access to correct historical information.

At the same time, the portal will enable the identification of previous names of localities, rivers, and other geographical objects mentioned in old documents and maps, facilitating decision-making in areas such as urban planning, infrastructure, emergencies, and land management.

The data will be accessible to public institutions, the private sector and citizens.

This year, the state allocated 499 thousand lei for the development of this information system, after Norway previously allocated a grant for the creation of the geographical names database.

"The costs are justified by the long-term benefits, such as reducing the time and resources allocated to manual processes, improving access to accurate data. Digitalization will also reduce the risk of data loss and support economic development by providing up-to-date spatial data for investors and authorities. (...) Companies in fields such as logistics, tourism, transport, or territorial planning will benefit from fast, efficient access to geographical names, which will support decision-making and project planning. In addition, the standardization and centralization of this data will contribute to reducing the risks generated by errors or information inconsistencies, providing a greater degree of predictability and reducing operational costs for companies", states the substantiation note of the project approved by the Government.

The registry will be integrated into the common government infrastructure, including the MPass, MConnect, MLog and MSign platforms.
