Mourning in the music world: Iurie Mahovici has passed away

The academic community of the Academy of Music, Theatre and Fine Arts (AMTAP) announces with deep sadness the passing of pianist and pedagogue Iurie Mahovici—university professor, Master of Arts, and People’s Artist—a prominent figure in the musical life of the Republic of Moldova. The renowned pianist passed away at the age of 63.

Iurie Mahovici was born on May 18, 1962, in the city of Leova, and dedicated his entire life to music and training young generations of artists. He graduated from the "Gavriil Musicescu" Conservatory in Chisinau, an institution where he would later return as a piano teacher, as well as from the "N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov" Conservatory in Saint Petersburg.
Throughout his career, Iurie Mahovici distinguished himself as a laureate of prestigious international competitions, being appreciated for the refinement of his interpretation and the depth of his artistic expression. He collaborated with renowned conductors and musicians and made numerous radio recordings, contributing to the promotion of the creations of great composers of national and world music.
The artist was the founder of the duet "Lapicus-Mahovici", together with Anatol Lapicus, soloist of the "Serghei Lunchevici" National Philharmonic and professor at the Piano Department of the Academy of Music, Theater and Fine Arts. Through his pedagogical and artistic activity, he made an essential contribution to the development and promotion of the piano art both in the country and abroad.
In its message, the institution expresses its sympathy towards the artist's relatives: "We extend our sincere condolences to the bereaved family, relatives, colleagues and disciples." The statement ends with the message: "May God rest him in peace!"
