Moldova invests €2.5 million in Sângerei water infrastructure to serve 12,000 residents

More than 12,000 residents in the Sângerei district will soon have access to safe drinking water. This follows the launch of a major regional infrastructure project to build water supply networks for ten local communities.
The project involves constructing a 46-kilometer main pipeline. This network will connect the villages of Vrănești, Brejeni, Ciuciueni, Iezărenii Vechi, Chișcăreni, Slobozia-Chișcăreni, Flămânzeni, Dumbrăvița, Bocancea-Schit, and Valea lui Vlad to the regional Soroca–Bălți–Sângerei system.
Strategic investment and regional development
The construction contract, valued at €2.52 million (approx. 49 million MDL), was signed on Wednesday, December 24. The agreement was finalized at the North Regional Development Agency (ADR Nord) between the Sângerei District Council and the contractor Montex-Gaz SRL.
The Moldovan government is funding the initiative through the National Fund for Regional and Local Development. The project is also co-financed by the beneficiaries and managed by ADR Nord.
A critical upgrade for public health
Authorities noted that the pipeline could eventually expand into the neighboring Telenești district. Currently, many communities in that area still face significant water shortages.
Despite building over 1,100 km of water networks in the last four years, nearly 40% of Moldova's population still lacks tap water. Most rural residents rely on local wells, though 70% of these sources fail to meet basic sanitary standards.
Currently, 1,006 localities in Moldova operate centralized water systems. The government plans to broaden the "European Village" program to ensure more regions benefit from modern infrastructure.
