Video evidence on Creangă’s money origin: Prosecutor says it’s irrelevant to the case
On December 26, the lawyers representing Ion Creangă, the former head of the Legal Department of Parliament, presented video evidence regarding the source of the money found on him at the time of his arrest. The recording shows Ion Creangă meeting with his brother, Ștefan Creangă, while carrying a bag, and then getting into a car. The defence aims to use these images to support their argument that the money found with Creangă is not linked to the alleged crimes. However, prosecutors argue that the evidence presented does not substantiate this claim.
A video clip was presented in court aimed at strengthening the defense's position regarding the meeting between Ion Creangă and his brother three days prior. Dumitru Ștefîrță, the prosecutor in the case, stated, “The defense insists that the money found on defendant Creangă during his detention was not transferred as alleged, but rather under different circumstances.”
Ion Creangă declined to speak with the press, responding, “A video was presented in court. What did you present? Why do you refuse to talk to us?”
Debates surrounding the video will continue in the upcoming hearings.
We remind you that Ion Creangă was detained on July 31, 2024, after allegedly providing information to Dmitri Kelov, a Russian diplomat and former assistant to the military attaché at the Russian Embassy.
Prosecutors have previously presented evidence, including images and intercepted communications, between Creangă and Kelov. The footage reportedly shows the former employee of the Russian Embassy handing money to Creangă.
If found guilty, the former Parliament official could face a prison sentence of 15 to 20 years. He maintains his innocence.
Ion Creangă began his career in Parliament in 1992 as a consultant and later became the head of the Legal Department.
