Klaus Iohannis: The Republic of Moldova will get additional support from the EU
President Klaus Iohannis said on Thursday that through Romania's involvement the Republic of Moldova would receive additional help from the European Union, pointing out that it was "unacceptable for this country to fall prey to disinformation, hybrid attacks and verbal threats from Russia," Agerpres reports.
"One particular point I would mention: in the conclusions, we have managed - our colleagues have been very involved - we have managed to include a relevant passage for Moldova. Moldova will receive additional, substantial aid, support from the EU, and we believe this is very important for Moldova, but also for us and for the whole of Europe, because it is unacceptable to leave Moldova prey to misinformation, hybrid attacks and verbal threats from Russia," said the Romanian President, before attending the Spring European Council meeting.
The Romanian leader was asked whether Romania's proposal to target pro-Russian entities in Moldova with a package of sanctions was likely to materialise by the end of the Swedish EU Council Presidency.
"Discussions are continuing and will continue until we find common solutions. Romania is very firm on this issue, but, you know, we are not alone and everyone must be - be careful - everyone agrees on a sanctions package. This is just one facet of what needs to be done to get Moldova through this difficult phase. There are many other things and I am quite optimistic that we will succeed in increasing European involvement in solving the Moldovan problems", President Iohannis replied.
President Klaus Iohannis is attending the Spring European Council meeting and the enlarged Euro Summit in Brussels on Thursday and Friday, Agerpres reports.
