Moldova's voter registry hits 3.3 million as CEC releases 2026 data

The total number of citizens registered in Moldova’s State Register of Voters reached 3,299,794 at the beginning of January 2026.
According to the Central Electoral Commission (CEC), 2,763,719 of these voters are officially domiciled within Tier II administrative-territorial units.
The highest concentration of eligible voters remains in the Chisinau municipality, which accounts for 666,923 citizens. This is followed by the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia with 129,314 voters and the Balti municipality with 99,097.
Regional distribution and density
Several districts maintain significant voter populations, including Cahul (97,567), Orhei (96,415), and Hincesti (95,724). Other notable regions include Ungheni, Ialoveni, and Straseni, all of which report over 75,000 registered voters.
Conversely, the lowest numbers of registered voters are found in the districts of Basarabeasca (23,721), Dubasari (29,481), and Donduseni (30,380).
Voters without local residence
A significant gap of 536,075 people exists between the total registry and those assigned to specific administrative districts. This figure comprises two distinct groups essential for understanding Moldova's electoral landscape.
The first group includes 258,440 citizens who lack a registered residence, a category that encompasses officially registered emigrants living abroad. The second group consists of 277,635 voters residing in the Transnistrian region, territories currently outside the sovereign control of the constitutional authorities.
These updated figures follow the parliamentary elections held on September 28, 2025, where more than 1.6 million Moldovan citizens participated at the polls.
