Large-scale protests in Israel. US expresses concern

Thousands of protesters took to the streets in Tel Aviv and several Israeli cities on Sunday following the announcement of the dismissal of Defence Minister Yoav Gallant. It comes after the official called for a one-month pause in the government's controversial judicial reform process the day before, Digi24.co.uk reports. The United States has expressed concern about the situation in Israel. The US is calling for "compromise" between the parties as "the best way forward" for Israel and its citizens.

The United States has expressed "deep concern" about the situation in Israel, where Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has sacked the defence minister who had called for a delay in justice reform, the source of massive protests in the streets of major cities. Washington is calling for a "compromise" between the parties.

"We are deeply concerned by the events in Israel, which once again underscore the urgent need for compromise. (...) Democratic societies are strengthened by checks and balances, and fundamental changes to a democratic system should be made with the broadest possible base of popular support," White House National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson said in a statement on Sunday, quoted by Digi24.

The current government, one of the most right-wing in Israel's history, is seeking through this reform to increase the power of parliamentarians at the expense of the judiciary. Critics say the proposed reform threatens the democratic nature of Israel.
