Warsaw as Chișinău’s strategic bridge to Washington

Poland is emerging as a critical geopolitical pivot for the Republic of Moldova, serving as a strategic conduit to the United States administration. According to security analyst Pavel Horea of WatchDog.md, Warsaw’s "special relationship" with Washington provides Chișinău with a unique platform to clarify its stance in high-stakes negotiations regarding the illicit Russian military presence in the Transnistrian region.

Warsaw’s bid for regional leadership in Eastern Europe is underpinned by its robust economy and superior military capabilities. This position allows Poland to act as an influential mediator between European interests and the American diplomatic vision. Horea emphasized that traditional channels through Brussels or Bucharest may lack the direct "fast-track" access to Washington that President Karol Nawrocki’s administration currently enjoys.

This partnership is particularly vital for the "Transnistrian file." Moldova seeks to understand the U.S. position on the fate of the occupied territories and whether the withdrawal of Russian troops will be treated as a standalone priority in upcoming international security dialogues.

Technical context and next steps

The analysis follows President Maia Sandu’s official visit to Poland on January 25-26, conducted at the invitation of President Nawrocki. During the summit, Sandu reaffirmed Poland's role as a cornerstone of Moldova’s national security and its resilience against unprecedented hybrid attacks.

The Moldovan delegation is scheduled to travel to Strasbourg on January 27. President Sandu will deliver a keynote address to the Plenary Session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), further cementing Moldova's European integration trajectory.
