Severe fog and ice disrupt national traffic across Moldova

Critical weather conditions continue to impact Moldova for the fourth consecutive day, with dense fog, black ice, and freezing rain paralyzing major transport routes.
The State Road Administration reported that emergency maintenance crews worked through the night in the Soroca, Fălești, and Nisporeni districts. Teams deployed technical salt and abrasive materials to stabilize road surfaces as visibility dropped below 200 meters.

Emergency response and road safety
Specialized intervention units removed fallen trees and debris from national highways, particularly in the Soroca and Dubăsari regions. Authorities confirmed that eight large trees were cleared to prevent total traffic blockages on essential corridors.
The State Hydrometeorological Service has extended the Yellow Warning for dense fog until today, January 29, at 1:00 PM. Law enforcement officials urge drivers to reduce speeds and maintain significant safety distances due to the high risk of collisions.
Institutional impact and public safety
The prolonged weather event has forced the majority of national schools to switch to remote learning protocols. Intercity transport and heavy-duty vehicles remain restricted on several routes to avoid mass accidents.
Pedestrians are advised to exercise extreme caution when crossing streets, as the thick fog significantly reduces their visibility to motorists. Emergency services remain on high alert, having already responded to hundreds of calls related to weather-induced incidents and falls on ice.
