Prosecutors seek 9-year sentence for former Boldurești Mayor in fatal crash case

Prosecutors have requested a nine-year prison sentence for Nicanor Ciochină, the former Mayor of Boldurești. He is accused of the fatal February 2024 hit-and-run of a 14-year-old boy.

On Thursday, January 29, the Chișinău Court extended Ciochină’s pretrial release under judicial supervision for an additional 60 days. This term is set to begin on February 5.

During the hearing, the court rejected the defendant's request to submit new video evidence. The judge ruled that the official evidentiary phase of the trial had already concluded.

Prosecutors also requested a three-year sentence for Ion Andronache. He is charged as an accomplice for allegedly helping the former official cover up the crime.

Investigations reveal that after the fatal impact, Ciochină fled the scene. He later attempted to mask the vehicle damage by staging a secondary collision with another car.

The trial is now in its final stages after the judicial investigation closed on January 6. Although the defendant pleads not guilty, he faces significant prison time if convicted.

The next hearing is scheduled for February 19. This date marks exactly one year since the tragic accident occurred in the Nisporeni district.
