Moldova braces for -20°C deep freeze as crisis management center issues emergency advisory

Moldova’s State Hydrometeorological Service has issued a Yellow Warning for ice, glazed frost, and a sharp temperature drop across the country starting January 30.

The National Crisis Management Center has mobilized all public institutions for emergency interventions. Authorities officially recommended that department heads shorten the workday on Friday to ensure citizen safety.

Extreme temperature shift

Following a period of unseasonably warm Mediterranean air, temperatures are expected to plummet by up to 7°C within 24 hours. By February 1, nighttime lows will reach between -15°C and -20°C.

Daytime temperatures will also remain significantly below freezing. On February 2 and 3, the public should prepare for highs ranging only between -7°C and -12°C.

Ice and snow warnings

Heavy rain will transition into sleet and snow on January 30, creating hazardous driving conditions due to widespread ice formation.

Light snowfall is specifically forecasted for the central and northern regions on Saturday. Citizens are advised to monitor official updates and limit non-essential travel during the peak of the frost.
