Adoption in Moldova: 72 children in Chisinau await permanent families

The Chisinau City Hall has announced that 72 children, including 38 girls and 34 boys, are currently eligible for adoption. Most of these minors are integrated into alternative care services while awaiting permanent placement.

According to local authorities, 15 of the children seeking families have special needs. The legal adoption procedure typically spans between six and nine months.

Rigorous safety standards

To ensure child welfare, authorities conduct mandatory home visits for eight years after a child joins a family. This long-term monitoring ensures a stable and appropriate environment for development.

Prospective parents must meet strict criteria. Applicants must provide a clean criminal record and prove they have never been stripped of parental rights in the past.

Costs and systemic progress

While the process is free for citizens of the Republic of Moldova, international adopters are required to pay a state fee of €153 (approx. 3,000 MDL).

In 2024, a total of 107 children successfully found permanent homes. This effort is part of a broader national success story in child welfare.

Moldova has reduced the number of children living in orphanages by 96% over the last few decades. By the end of 2025, fewer than 400 children remained in the country’s residential care system.
