Echoes of Brâncuși: Moldova’s master sculptors headline cross-border 150th anniversary celebration
Sculpting studios across the Republic of Moldova are pulsing with creative energy as artists finalize works for a landmark event. The upcoming exhibition commemorates the 150th anniversary of the birth of Constantin Brâncuși, the titan of modern sculpture.

The celebration marks a significant moment for the Romanian cultural space. Artists from both sides of the Prut River, who consider themselves disciples of Brâncuși’s philosophy, will showcase their latest creations.
A dialogue with genius
Renowned sculptor Ion Zderciuc, a recent Ministry of Culture laureate, explains that Brâncuși’s influence is filtered through a personal conceptual lens. His featured work, "Parade of Planets," translates an astronomical phenomenon into a meditative composition of figures and an angel.
Zderciuc will also present "On the Wings of Love," a suggestive piece carved in wood. The sculpture explores the "interplay of love" through two intertwined figures, showcasing his versatility in both marble and timber.

Identity and memory
The exhibition also features Ioan Grecu, a reference name in Moldovan contemporary art. Grecu will present three distinct works: the wooden "Slices of Longing," the granite "Inner Gaze," and a symbolic bronze mask.
The bronze piece originates from a bust of Prince Alexander the Good. Grecu reimagines the historical figure by placing the "mask of our kindness" on stilts, creating a bridge between historical memory and modern form.
A cross-border premiere
Ioan Grecu, who also serves as the exhibition curator, announced that the event marks a premiere. For the first time, this major exhibition—now in its sixth edition—will expand into Chisinau as part of the "Month of Romanian Sculptors."
The "Month of Romanian Sculptors" will run from February 19 to March 19. This cultural marathon includes synchronized exhibitions in Chisinau, Iași, Alba Iulia, and Târgu Jiu, honoring the Brâncuși legacy across the region.
