Iași Airport to build dedicated terminal for Republic of Moldova transport links
Iași International Airport (IAS) has announced the construction of a specialized parking terminal dedicated to minibuses and coaches serving the Republic of Moldova. The project aims to eliminate terminal congestion and mitigate recurring friction between airport staff and unauthorized transport operators.
The new facility is scheduled for completion in 2027. Until then, transport providers will continue to utilize the existing, overstrained infrastructure under heightened supervision to maintain operational order.
Modernizing cross-border logistics
The decision follows several security concerns involving shuttle drivers soliciting passengers directly inside the terminal. These unauthorized practices often led to verbal altercations with airport personnel and disrupted the passenger experience.
"Our goal is to prevent past incidents involving certain carriers from the Republic of Moldova," stated Elena Troia, spokesperson for Iași International Airport. The administration intends to professionalize the flow of cross-border traffic through structured infrastructure.
A comprehensive transport hub
The planned terminal will feature ten dedicated spaces for minibuses, 15 spots for taxis and ride-sharing services, and two high-capacity coach platforms. A centralized ticketing office will also be integrated to standardize operations.
The airport administration will fully fund the investment. The total project cost is currently being finalized through a comprehensive feasibility study, intended to address long-standing complaints regarding elevated parking fees and the lack of organized spaces.
Strategic importance for the region
Iași International Airport currently ranks as Romania’s third busiest aviation hub. Last year, it recorded over 2.2 million passengers, a significant portion of whom were Moldovan citizens attracted by competitive fares and a broad range of European destinations.
For these travelers, the dedicated terminal represents a vital upgrade. Passengers have noted that organized transit will provide a safer and more cost-effective alternative to the current fragmented transport landscape at the airport.
