PSRM questions the legality of replacing "Moldovan language" with "Romanian language"

The Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova (PSRM) is asking the Constitutional Court to verify the constitutionality of replacing the phrase "Moldovan language" with "Romanian language" in national legislation. To this end, representatives of the party filed a petition with the High Court today. According to PSRM Executive Secretary Vlad Batrîncea, the Constitution must be respected by all equally, and this law voted in Parliament by PAS deputies cannot go beyond the constitutional framework.

"The Constitution cannot be amended by an organic law, voted by a simple majority in Parliament. Laws passed by Parliament cannot go beyond the constitutional framework and it must be in strict accordance with the Supreme Law," said Socialist MP Vlad Batrîncea.

In December 2013, the Constitutional Court ruled that the official language of the Republic of Moldova is Romanian, as written in the Declaration of Independence, which prevails over the Constitution. On 16 March 2023, the Parliament voted in the final reading of the draft law providing for the replacement of the phrase "Moldovan language" with the phrase "Romanian language" in all national legislation and normative acts. On 22 March, President Maia Sandu promulgated the law confirming that the state language of the Republic of Moldova is Romanian, and on 24 March the law was published in the Official Gazette and entered into force. According to the amendments, the phrase "Romanian language" will replace the phrase "Moldovan language". The terms "official language", "state language" and "mother tongue" will also be replaced.
