Charles Michel: I will support the Republic of Moldova. I hope the Commission's report will be positive

The statement was made by European Council President Charles Michel in an exclusive interview with Moldova 1. According to the official, the European Commission is about to publish a report on the actions of countries with candidate status for accession and hopes that Moldova will receive a positive opinion.

"This is another opportunity for European countries to express their support, to take decisions to provide more macro-financial assistance, more support in security reforms, but also more security equipment. The impact of the reforms, which are needed. So we have some clear steps. In the coming months, the European Commission will publish a report on the Republic of Moldova and the other candidate countries, and after that, the Council will have to take a decision on the opening of negotiations. I will do my utmost to support Moldova. I hope that the Commission's report will be positive," said the President of the European Council.

Charles Michel also commented on the deadlock in the judiciary and the actions taken by the authorities. He said he would provide all the necessary support to our country to speed up reform in the judiciary.

"The Moldovan authorities are right when they want to speed up reforms. It is our responsibility as the European Union to see what we can do. For example, to provide more support, more evaluators to speed up this process. We do not underestimate the difficulty of making these reforms happen. This is very important to guarantee the fight against corruption, the law, sanctions and destabilisation attempts where they are", said the EU official.

Asked about our country's requests to impose sanctions on oligarchs, Charles Michel replied that there is currently no legal framework that would allow them to be sanctioned, but work is underway to ensure that our country receives support in this regard.
