National Library of Moldova launches innovative literacy strategy ahead of National Reading Day
The National Library of the Republic of Moldova hosted a landmark assembly today, bringing together authors, digital creators, and librarians to redefine reading in the age of Artificial Intelligence. The event showcased innovative projects designed to engage a generation whose information consumption habits have fundamentally shifted over the last two decades.
Elena Pintilei, Director of the National Library, emphasized that the challenge lies not just in declining interest, but in a profound change in how society processes text. She highlighted the "sensitive friction" between 21st-century reading habits, AI interaction, and the protection of intellectual property rights.
Librarians from the country's districts report a growing counter-trend among parents. Nadejda Pădure, Director of the "Mihail Sadoveanu" Library in Strășeni, noted an increasing demand for "phone-free" activities for children, signaling a grassroots realization that digital detox is becoming essential for cognitive development.
AI as the new cultural architect
Digital creator Vitalie Eșanu offered a stark perspective on the future of knowledge. He argued that AI is effectively becoming "culture" itself, accumulating human thought and reflecting it back upon request. Eșanu warned that as time for deep reading diminishes, AI interaction will likely become the primary mode of information consumption.
Writer Emilian Galaicu-Păun countered this by advocating for "liberating" literature. Reflecting on his own journey at the National Library, he distinguished between ideological texts that manipulate and authentic literature that empowers individual choice and freedom of thought.
National Reading Day celebrations
The event also marked the expansion of the "Lectura Central" national program. Coordinator Vera Osoianu announced the "Authors in the Community" initiative, which will facilitate 70 literary meetings—two in each district—across the republic this year.
Moldova will officially celebrate National Reading Day on February 14, coinciding with the birth anniversary of national poet Grigore Vieru. Commemorations will begin at the Alley of Classics in Chișinău and continue with cultural events nationwide.
