Mircea Geoană: The attempt to overthrow an elected democratic regime is an active operation in the Republic of Moldova
Russia does not have enough resources to reach Odesa, the transnistrian region and close the loop, and NATO does not see a risk of an imminent military attack on the Republic of Moldova, the deputy general secretary of the Northern Alliance said in an exclusive interview for TVR INFO - Atlantic, Mircea Geoană. "This does not mean that the Russian Federation is not using, as we speak, an arsenal of hybrid warfare in its entirety against the Republic of Moldova," said the NATO official, who emphasized that the attempt to overthrow an elected democratic regime "is an active operation " in the Republic of Moldova.
"The attempt to overthrow an elected democratic regime is an active operation, the mobilization of political forces from the Republic of Moldova, communication, disinformation, lies are used on a very large scale in the Republic of Moldova", declared the Deputy Secretary General of NATO.
Mircea Geoană evoked the statement of President Maia Sandu regarding the status of neutrality and defense capacity of the Republic of Moldova.
"It is true that the Republic of Moldova is not a state that has the desire to join NATO, as is the case, for example, of Ukraine or Georgia, because they have a Constitution of neutrality that we respect. But, as the president Maia Sandu used to say, being neutral does not mean that you have to be militarily weak. That is why, under the aegis of resilience, we are intensifying our support for the Republic of Moldova, this country so close to Romania and for all of us. It is a common partner of NATO and the European Union, and that is why this partnership is very, very important. In fact, the European Union (...) declared the Republic of Moldova as a candidate for accession - it is a tremendously important thing", said Mircea Geoană.
"Russia is extremely aggressive, it is clear that we are talking about spheres of influence – Russia sees the Republic of Moldova, Ukraine, Georgia, Belarus, the Caucasus as its own sphere of influence, and what I said for Ukraine is also valid for the Republic of Moldova - the Republic of Moldova is the only one who can decide its future", declared Mircea Geoană.
The Deputy Secretary General of NATO also had a direct message in this context.
"I hope that the citizens of the Republic of Moldova, regardless of ethnicity, political preference, whether they are in the Republic of Moldova or in the diaspora, that they too, like the Romanians (...) have chosen to go to a better life, to understand that to remain in the gray area of Europe is an invitation to aggression and poverty. They have to decide, and I think the best decision is to come to a civilized, democratic and prosperous Europe. It is a shame for a country that the Republic of Moldova is the poorest in Europe, when it could be alongside Romania, alongside the other European partners, a democratic, prosperous nation that can enjoy peace and prosperity", said Mircea Geoană.
