President Sandu issues national alert on AI-driven scams and digital fraud
President Maia Sandu has issued a public warning regarding the surge in sophisticated phone and online scams targeting Moldovan citizens. The Head of State emphasized that criminal networks are increasingly utilizing artificial intelligence to defraud individuals of significant financial assets.
Recent months have seen a rise in "vishing" (voice phishing) and fraudulent investment schemes. Sandu noted that these criminals are highly skilled in social engineering, often posing as bank employees, police officers, or distressed relatives to gain trust.
The threat of AI-generated deception
The President specifically highlighted the use of deepfake technology to create fraudulent videos. These clips often misappropriate the likeness of public figures, including Sandu herself, to promote fake high-yield investment opportunities or urgent transfers.
"Remember, only criminals ask for money, passwords, or offer quick riches over the phone," Sandu stated. She urged citizens to immediately terminate any suspicious communication requesting sensitive data or emergency funds.
Institutional response and challenges
Law enforcement agencies are currently investigating several organized networks, including fraudulent call centers. However, Sandu warned that many perpetrators operate from extraterritorial jurisdictions, allowing them to shift platforms rapidly and evade local prosecution.
The Presidency has instructed citizens to verify any suspicious claims by contacting trusted individuals or local authorities directly. "Break the conversation, call your children, or speak with your mayor before taking any action," the President advised.
Protecting the vulnerable
The official message concluded with a call for younger generations to educate elderly relatives about these digital risks. Authorities continue to document cases where victims were manipulated into transferring funds for non-existent returns or legal emergencies.
Criminal proceedings are ongoing against several organized groups identified during recent raids. The government remains committed to strengthening cyber-resilience while legal measures are adapted to meet these evolving technological threats.
