Moldova reaffirms strong support for Ukraine with Parliament-approved declaration

Four years after the large-scale military invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation, the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova, at the initiative of the Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) faction, adopted a declaration supporting Ukraine's independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

The declaration received support from 65 deputies during the session on February 26. With this, the Parliament honors the courage and heroism of the Ukrainian people and *“firmly condemns the criminal actions of the Russian Federation, which, in blatant disregard of international law, continues to commit war crimes and crimes against humanity.”

Alexandr Trubca, the Chairman of the Moldova-Ukraine Parliamentary Friendship Group, stated from the Parliament rostrum that the Russian Federation continues to kill civilians, commit acts of torture, and illegally execute prisoners of war.

“By its illegal, unprovoked, and unjustified large-scale military invasion of Ukraine, the Russian Federation has seriously violated the provisions of the Charter of the United Nations, the Helsinki Final Act of 1975, as well as its obligations under the Memorandum on Security Assurances related to Ukraine’s Accession to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, dated December 5, 1994,” the parliamentarian quoted in the Declaration.

The Parliament reaffirms its unwavering support for the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders. The legislature emphasizes the importance of continued support for Ukraine by its partners and stresses the need to intensify international efforts to document and investigate the crimes committed by the Russian Federation.

Additionally, the Declaration states that the accession of both the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine to the European Union holds strategic significance for regional stability, security, and development across Europe.

“We call on the international community, national parliaments, and governments to maintain unity, determination, and consistency in supporting Ukraine until its sovereignty and territorial integrity are fully restored within its internationally recognized borders,” the text quoted by Alexandr Trubca also states.

Before voting on the declaration, the parliamentarians observed a moment of silence for the victims of the war in Ukraine—“those who fell on the front lines, the civilians killed, and all those who suffered because of the invasion.”

“It has been four years since the beginning of the brutal and unjustified invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation—an act of aggression that brings death, destruction, and suffering to millions of people. Thousands of civilians have been killed, children have been abducted due to the war, hospitals and schools have been bombed, and cities turned to ruins. The Republic of Moldova stands in solidarity with Ukraine and the Ukrainian people. We are grateful to our neighbors for the courage with which they defend their freedom, their country, and their future. Through their resistance, they also defend the peace and security of the entire region, including the Republic of Moldova,” said Igor Grosu.

On the morning of February 24, 2022, the Russian Federation launched a large-scale military invasion of Ukraine. This war has claimed the lives of tens of thousands, devastated numerous localities, and forced millions to seek refuge, including in the member states of the European Union and the Republic of Moldova.
