Moldova approves €1.07 million Japanese grant to modernize national broadcaster Teleradio-Moldova

The Government of Moldova has officially authorized the signing of a grant agreement with Japan, securing €1.07 million (approx. 21 million MDL) for the comprehensive modernization of the national public broadcaster, Teleradio-Moldova (TRM).
The funding, facilitated through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), marks the final procedural stage for the financial aid package. Minister of Culture Cristian Jardan emphasized that the project extends beyond hardware procurement, incorporating specialized consultancy and staff training to ensure long-term operational sustainability.
Rigorous oversight and implementation
The bilateral agreement, involving 192 million Japanese Yen, was previously ratified by Parliament in February with a solid majority. According to Adrian Băluțel, Vice-Chairman of the Foreign Policy Commission, consultancy fees are strictly capped at 5% of the total grant, ensuring the vast majority of funds directly finance high-tech equipment upgrades.
Long-term Institutional Resilience
The initiative follows a strategic roadmap initiated in late 2024. Moldovan authorities highlighted the "friendly and vital support" from Tokyo, aimed at aligning public media production with international technological standards. The project is slated for implementation over a five-year period, with a final signing deadline set for March 2027.
