Moldova targets 170 MW renewable energy landmark as foreign investment interest surges

The Republic of Moldova is positioning the energy sector as a national priority, signaling a major shift toward large-scale renewable projects and modern storage solutions.
Mihai Burunciuc, Deputy Director of the Invest Moldova Agency, confirmed that a high-stakes tender for 170 MW of wind energy is currently drawing interest from major global conglomerates.
Mandatory storage and grid stability
The tender includes a critical requirement for 25% storage capacity, amounting to approximately 44.5 MW. This ensures the integration of intermittent wind power into the national grid.
According to Burunciuc, large-scale investment intentions are also advancing in the biogas sector, with serious interest originating from Asian, European, and American markets.
An eightfold surge in green production
The shift follows a radical transformation triggered by the regional energy crisis. In 2021, renewables accounted for only 3.1% of Moldova's consumption.
By 2025, that figure reached 25%. This nearly eightfold increase marks one of the fastest energy transitions in the region.
Economic competitiveness as a driver
"Green energy is no longer just a strategic choice; it is a strict economic necessity," Burunciuc stated during a recent broadcast.
He emphasized that production costs directly dictate export competitiveness. High energy overheads jeopardize the market position of local goods, making affordable renewables essential for growth.
The Invest Moldova Agency expects several major project milestones to be officially announced later this year as negotiations with international partners reach the final stages.
