The Republic of Moldova seeks energy cooperation with Azerbaijan

The Republic of Moldova aims to enhance its partnership with the Republic of Azerbaijan, particularly in energy security. This interest was expressed by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popsoi during a meeting with his Azerbaijani counterpart, Jeyhun Bayramov, held in Baku.

Mihai Popșoi stated at a press conference in Baku on March 6 that, "We want to expand economic and energy cooperation and fully harness the potential of our relations. The Republic of Azerbaijan is a key partner in strengthening energy security and developing joint projects for the benefit of our citizens."

The Moldovan official emphasized that the energy sector could become a crucial aspect of bilateral relations. He highlighted that ensuring energy security by diversifying natural gas supply sources and routes is one of the government's primary priorities in Chișinău.

In response, Minister Jeyhun Bayramov reaffirmed Azerbaijan's commitment to enhancing bilateral dialogue and developing cooperation projects in areas of mutual interest.

Bayramov remarked, "Relations between Azerbaijan and the Republic of Moldova are evolving in a spirit of friendship and mutual respect, encompassing economic, energy, cultural, and educational sectors."

He also expressed appreciation for the interest in expanding cooperation, particularly through investments in renewable energy and support for regional green energy initiatives.

During the Republic of Moldova's Minister of Foreign Affairs' visit to Baku, the two ministers signed the Inter-Ministerial Consultations Plan for the period 2026-2027, which aims to intensify bilateral diplomatic dialogue.

Mihai Popșoi extended an invitation to his counterpart to visit the Republic of Moldova on an official visit. He also invited them to participate in the Ministerial Session of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, scheduled for May 14-15, 2026, in Chișinău.

Deputy Prime Minister Popsoi held discussions in Baku with the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev. Their talks centered on the development of Moldovan-Azerbaijani relations and explored opportunities for enhancing bilateral cooperation in areas such as the economy, energy, culture, and tourism.
