Peace in Ukraine may enable Russian troop withdrawal from Transnistrian region, Chiveri

A lasting peace in Ukraine could pave the way for the withdrawal of Russian troops from the Transnistrian region and expedite the conflict resolution process. This statement was made by Valeriu Chiveri, the Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration, during the "Realitatea te priveste" program.

In the official's view, the ongoing war in Ukraine directly affects the prospects for resolving the Transnistrian conflict.

"A fair and lasting peace in Ukraine, along with solid security guarantees, could create favorable conditions for the withdrawal of Russian military forces and ammunition from the region. This would also pave the way for a more active settlement process," stated Deputy Prime Minister Valeriu Chiveri.

While the withdrawal of Russian troops from the Republic of Moldova has been discussed at the European level, Chiveri noted that "it was a proposal that did not advance, at least in public discourse."

He also said that the authorities in Chisinau are relying on external partners for support to address this issue. "We sincerely hope that member states share a common vision regarding the need to withdraw Russian military forces from the region," Chiveri emphasized.

In this context, he highlighted that resolving the Transnistrian conflict is crucial not only for the Republic of Moldova but also for Ukraine, which seeks to secure the Moldovan-Ukrainian border segment that runs through Transnistrian region.

We remind you that the Russian Task Force is stationed in the Transnistrian region, where one of the largest ammunition depots in Eastern Europe is located near the town of Cobasna. Russia pledged in 1999, at the OSCE summit in Istanbul, to withdraw its troops and ammunition from the Republic of Moldova, but this process remains incomplete.
