Moldova’s gender equality index hits 61 as traditionalist views surge
The 2026 Gender Equality Index reveals a widening paradox in Moldova, where women remain more educated than men yet earn 17% less and face significant retirement poverty. Despite recent legislative efforts to support working parents, a new report by the Partnership for Development Center (CPD) shows a regression in social perceptions, with the national equality score stalling at 61 out of 100 points.
Societal attitudes toward gender roles have hardened significantly over the last five years. Currently, 62.4% of citizens believe a woman’s primary duty is the household—a sharp increase from 48% in 2021. Experts warn that these entrenched stereotypes are not merely cultural nuances but direct precursors to systemic inequality and domestic violence.
The retirement and wage gap
The financial disparity is most visible in the senior population. While women live nearly nine years longer than men, their average monthly pension is €208 (approx. 4,082 MDL), compared to €256 (approx. 5,013 MDL) for men. This €48–€51 gap stems from a career-long wage deficit and interrupted professional paths due to domestic expectations.
Structural reforms vs. executive reality
The 2026 Index highlights a dual reality for the Moldovan labor market. While the state has successfully implemented structural reforms for parental leave, women remain underrepresented in top-tier executive roles. Alexandra Ermolenco, Program Director at CPD, notes that the perception of "household duty" continues to block women from reaching high-level decision-making positions.
Demographic weight without economic power
Women constitute over half of Moldova's population and the vast majority of the elderly demographic. However, their superior academic attainment has yet to translate into equal economic power. Advocates argue that without addressing the root of traditionalist dogmas, legislative progress will continue to be undermined by cultural friction.
