Moldova invests €8 million to reach record high in national cataract surgeries

A record number of patients in the Republic of Moldova successfully regained their vision last year through the national cataract treatment program. The mandatory health insurance system covered costs for over 14,000 surgeries, significantly reducing historical backlogs.

The total volume of free surgical interventions performed in 2025 represents an increase of 2,200 procedures compared to the previous year. This growth marks a major milestone in the country's efforts to modernize its public health outcomes.

The National Health Insurance Company (CNAM) allocated over €8.33 million (approx. 164 million MDL) for these procedures. This investment reflects an increase of nearly 12 million MDL over the 2024 budget.

The budget supplement enabled authorities to not only treat more patients but also broaden the network of service providers. To ensure wider access, CNAM contracted 18 medical institutions, allowing patients to choose between public and private clinics.

Looking ahead to 2026, authorities have planned an even larger budget of €8.53 million (168 million MDL). This funding is set to finance more than 14,600 operations, maintaining the momentum of the program.

The program remains accessible to all insured citizens who possess medical indications and are registered on the official waiting lists. Currently, the wait time for allocation to a provider is approximately one year, while regional hospitals often process cases within six months.

This tiered approach ensures that patients across the country, regardless of their location, can access necessary treatment within a predictable timeframe.
