On the eve of International Women's Day, UNFPA Moldova has launched the "Heavy Bouquet" awareness campaign, urging society to look past symbolic gestures and confront the daily challenges women face.

In a public activation in the capital, passers-by were offered free tulips that carried a literal weight. Small sacks of stones were attached to each stem, symbolizing the domestic pressures and social expectations many women carry.

The weight of expectation

Participants who received the flowers found messages detailing the "invisible" tasks of daily life: maintaining a home, childcare, and the constant pressure to meet professional and aesthetic standards.

"These flowers come with a long list of difficult expectations," stated Karina Nersesyan, UNFPA Representative in Moldova. "We are committed to ensuring a world free from gender-based violence and social norms that demand unpaid work without partner support."

A systemic gap

The campaign highlights a significant social divide. The 2025 Gender Equality Index indicates that over 63% of Moldova’s population still believes domestic and family responsibilities belong primarily to women.

Beyond the home, the economic gap persists. Some participants noted that even in 2026, women often receive lower earnings than men for the same level of expertise, emphasizing that opportunities are more valuable than bouquets.

Institutional support

The initiative was organized by UNFPA Moldova under the aegis of the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection. It also involved the National Agency for Preventing and Combating Violence Against Women.

The campaign received financial backing from the Government of the United Kingdom, aiming to shift the national conversation from mere celebration to substantive structural reform.
