EU accession

Moldova could join the EU by 2028, Nicușor Dan

The Republic of Moldova could become an EU member by 2028, earlier than the 2030 deadline set by Chisinau. Romanian President Nicușor Dan believes this may happen if there is sufficient political will.

The statements were made during the Romanian leader's visit to Poland. In an interview with RFI, Nicușor Dan emphasized that the Republic of Moldova has made exceptional progress.

“The European Council—during discussions about all candidate countries, including those in the Balkans—appreciates the extraordinary efforts that Moldova has made. If there is political will, accession could happen as early as 2028. However, we need to see the beginning of the formal process,” said Nicușor Dan.

The Romanian president highlighted two important factors: the parallel European paths of the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine, and Hungary's opposition to Ukraine's accession. Nicușor noted that these processes will become clearer after the upcoming elections in Hungary, which everyone is closely monitoring.

Regarding the possibility of reunification, the Romanian president stated that union with Romania is not being considered as a fallback option for Moldova's European journey. He underscored that it depends on the will of the citizens, which, for now, does not exist.

“I respect the sovereign will of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova,” Nicușor Dan reiterated.

Romania remains the most important partner for the Republic of Moldova in its European path. When asked how Bucharest could assist Chișinău in the event that the war in the Middle East leads to a new oil crisis, the leader from Cotroceni mentioned developing energy connections. He noted that he had discussed this aspect with Mihai Mîțu, the new Moldovan ambassador to Bucharest.

“The situation is much better than it was 3-4 years ago, and in a year or two, Romania, along with the Republic of Moldova, will be able to ensure energy independence,” said Nicușor Dan regarding energy matters.

The President of Romania paid an official visit to Warsaw at the invitation of Poland's President, Karol Nawrocki. He also held meetings with Prime Minister Donald Tusk and the leadership of the Polish Parliament.
