Washington says it is "extremely concerned" by the arrest in Russia of "Wall Street Journal" journalist

The United States of America (USA) condemns the arrest by the Russian Federation of American journalist Evan Gershkovich, a reporter for "The Wall Street Journal". The head of US diplomacy, Antony Blinken, said he was "extremely concerned" about Moscow's actions to punish the press.

The Washington administration says it is in "direct contact" with the Russian government and Gershkovich's relatives.

A Moscow court on Thursday ordered the two-month detention of Gershkovich, who is being held by the FSB on charges of spying for Washington.

The journalist faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted on charges of spying in Russia.
