Bundestag President Julia Klöckner reaffirms German support in historic Kyiv visit

Bundestag President Julia Klöckner arrived in Kyiv on Wednesday, marking her first visit to Ukraine since the full-scale invasion began and since assuming her role in March 2025. The high-level visit, kept secret until her arrival for security reasons, aims to reassure Ukraine of Germany's continued backing amidst shifting global focus toward the Middle East.
Upon her arrival at the Kyiv railway station, where she was met by Verkhovna Rada Chairman Ruslan Stefanchuk, Klöckner emphasized that Ukraine’s security is synonymous with European stability. "It is vital for us to demonstrate the stability of our support to Kyiv," she told reporters.
She noted that while international attention has recently pivoted toward Iran and the Middle East, Germany remains acutely aware that Ukraine is now in its fifth year of an aggressive war. Klöckner stated clearly that Germany will persist as a key strategic ally because a stable Ukraine serves the fundamental interests of Europe.
Freedom beyond financial measure
Addressing internal German debates regarding the financial burden of military and humanitarian aid, the Bundestag President offered a firm moral rebuttal. "Freedom and self-determination cannot be measured in monetary terms," Klöckner remarked.
She warned that the consequences of a Ukrainian defeat would be catastrophic for the continent. According to Klöckner, if Ukraine falls, other European nations will inevitably find themselves in the Russian crosshairs, making the current defense a "collective struggle" for European sovereignty.
A historic address to the Verkhovna Rada
The President of the Bundestag is scheduled to meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during her stay. In a significant diplomatic milestone, she will also become the first official German representative to address the Ukrainian deputies directly from the rostrum of the Verkhovna Rada.
This gesture is seen as a powerful symbol of the institutional bond between Berlin and Kyiv under the current German administration. Her speech is expected to further detail the long-term security guarantees and reconstruction efforts spearheaded by Germany.
