Moldova and Romania plant forests along the Prut. Hajder: “Nature has no borders”

The Republic of Moldova and Romania are collaborating on a joint initiative to plant trees along both sides of the Prut River this Saturday. This effort is part of the National Afforestation Campaign titled "Forest Generation - Spring 2026." The Minister of Environment, Gheorghe Hajder, announced that the tree plantings will occur simultaneously in both countries as a commitment to environmental protection.
According to the minister, this initiative conveys a message of cooperation and shared responsibility for nature.
“#ForestGeneration has crossed the Prut. Today, the Republic of Moldova and Romania are jointly planting saplings along both banks, sending a clear message that nature knows no borders. Meanwhile, tree plantings are continuing throughout the country at various locations with the support of volunteers and foresters,” Gheorghe Hajder stated in a Facebook post.
The afforestation campaign was officially launched at the Sculeni border crossing on February 28, where the Minister of Environment announced the commencement of activities planned for this spring. Authorities aim to afforest approximately 3,000 hectares and plant over 11 million saplings, which will be grown in specialized nurseries.
Currently, the afforestation rate in the Republic of Moldova stands at just over 11%, significantly below the European Union average of over 35%. In recent years, more than 20,000 hectares have been afforested in the country.
The “Forest Generation – Spring 2026” campaign is part of the National Program for Forest Expansion and Rehabilitation, initiated by President Maia Sandu. This program aims to create 145,000 hectares of new forests across the nation.
Planting activities are taking place in various localities throughout the Republic of Moldova. Citizens who wish to participate can find information about the locations on the "Moldsilva" Agency's webpage, specifically in the campaign section.
