How a 20-year-old entrepreneur is reviving Moldovan rural tourism in Selemet

In the village of Selemet, Cimișlia, 20-year-old Mădălina Jaloba is redefining rural hospitality. As the manager of "La Mădălina" agritourism pension, she balances university studies in accounting with the rigorous demands of a family business.

Her approach blends centuries-old traditions with modern management. Guests are welcomed with the ritualistic bread and salt before exploring the estate’s private museum and historical cellars, which preserve the authentic heritage of the region.

Turning heritage into an experience

Mădălina identified early on that international and local tourists seek immersive experiences rather than just lodging. One of the pension's primary attractions is the culinary masterclass focused on "handoape"—a local linguistic variant of the traditional sarmale (stuffed cabbage rolls).

"When I see the spark in tourists' eyes as they discover our secrets, I know my work truly matters," says Mădălina Jaloba. This dedication has turned the pension into a focal point for regional tourism development.

A future built on resilience

Mădălina’s entrepreneurial journey began at 14 through community volunteering. This experience allowed her to master the complexities of grant writing, successfully securing funding to expand the family’s agricultural business.

Despite the widespread trend of youth migration from Moldova, Mădălina remains committed to her roots. She views her accounting studies as a tool to further professionalize the local tourism sector.

"My mother taught us to work for our dreams and stay united," she explains. "My brother and I cannot imagine a situation that would force us to leave our country."

This report is part of the "Portraits of Courage" campaign by Moldova 1, highlighting women who inspire through professional dedication and community impact.
