EU extends sanctions against Russia until September 2026

The European Council decided on March 14 to extend restrictive measures against those responsible for undermining Ukraine’s territorial integrity, sovereignty, and independence. The sanctions regime is now prolonged for another six months, effective until September 15, 2026.

Individual measures will continue to apply to approximately 2,600 individuals and entities. These listings were originally established in response to Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified military aggression against Ukraine.

The current framework includes travel bans for natural persons, the freezing of assets, and a strict prohibition on providing funds or economic resources to any listed individual or entity.

During this latest review, the Council also opted not to renew the listings for two individuals. Additionally, five deceased persons were removed from the official sanctions list as part of standard administrative maintenance.

Since February 24, 2022, the EU has massively expanded its sanctions to weaken Russia’s economic base. These measures aim to deprive Moscow of critical technologies and significantly reduce its capacity to wage war.

Commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty

In an official statement, the European Council reaffirmed its unwavering support for Ukraine’s independence and integrity within its internationally recognized borders. This stance aligns with the positions held by 25 heads of state or government during the December 2025 summit.

The EU remains committed to providing comprehensive political, financial, and military support in coordination with global allies. According to the Council, the Union is determined to increase pressure on Russia to end its war of aggression and engage in meaningful peace negotiations.
