New museum rules: a single framework statute for all institutions

Museums in the Republic of Moldova currently operate under their own rules, which authorities say often lack consistency and alignment. At the Ministry of Culture’s proposal, the Government decided to standardise them by approving a framework statute for the organisation and operation of public museums.

The Republic of Moldova has 131 registered museums. Seven fall under the Ministry of Culture, one operates at the municipal level, 33 belong to districts, and 83 function at the local level. Five private museums also operate.

“Until now, museums have followed their own rules, which often differ, lack uniformity, and remain unclear. Through this project, we aim to introduce a single framework statute for all,” said Minister of Culture Cristian Jardan at the Government meeting on March 18.

The approved framework statute will serve as the regulatory basis for each public museum’s internal statute.

“We aim to improve how all museums operate, ensure more efficient management, and most importantly, enhance the use of the national cultural heritage,” Minister Jardan added.

The decision will take effect one month after its publication in the Official Gazette of the Republic of Moldova.
