Ukraine sends top negotiators to US amid Middle East resource pivot

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on 19 March that a high-level Ukrainian delegation is travelling to the United States for scheduled talks this Saturday.

The meeting follows weeks of diplomatic stagnation. Officials have warned that the escalating conflict in the Middle East has diverted critical political attention and military resources away from Ukraine.

"There has been a lull in talks, and it is time to resume them," Zelenskyy stated. He emphasised that the administration is working to ensure these negotiations yield "substantive" results for the frontline.

The delegation includes Defence Minister Rustem Umerov, intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov, and senior diplomat Sergiy Kyslytsia. Their primary goal is to establish the conditions for a "dignified peace," according to the presidency.

Significant uncertainty remains regarding Russian participation in the 21 March session. The last trilateral discussions involving Kyiv, Moscow, and Washington took place in Geneva in mid-February.

Subsequent meetings were cancelled following military strikes between the US, Israel, and Iran. This geopolitical shift has prompted concerns among European allies regarding the delivery of air defence systems.

EU Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas warned that Kyiv and the Middle East are now "competing for the same resources." This visit is seen as a critical attempt by Ukraine to secure its standing as Washington’s primary security priority.
