Mayor of Causeni, Alexandru Donțu, pre-trial detention for 30 days

The mayor of Căușeni, Alexandru Donțu, has been placed in pre-trial detention for 30 days. The information was confirmed for Teleradio-Moldova by the spokesperson of the General Prosecutor’s Office, Violina Moraru.

The decision to place him in custody was taken on Friday, 20 March, at the request of prosecutors in Chișinău.

The mayor of Căușeni, Alexandru Donțu, is accused of soliciting and accepting a bribe in the amount of 89,300 lei. He was detained on 18 March in a case initiated on charges of abuse of office and corruption. The case concerns the alleged unlawful actions of several employees of the local public administration in Căușeni, as well as of a private business operator.

On the same day, law enforcement officers carried out searches at the Căușeni City Hall, including in the mayor’s office, as well as in the offices of several businesses targeted in the investigation. From these locations, officers seized documents, data storage devices, and other evidence relevant to the criminal case.

The investigation is ongoing under the procedural guidance of the Chișinău Municipal Prosecutor’s Office.
