Citizens of the Republic of Moldova are warned about a new scam scheme, in which unknown individuals pose as police officers and attempt to obtain money or personal data.

According to law enforcement, the scammers contact victims by phone, introduce themselves as Police employees and claim there are alleged “illegal loans” taken out in their names. To appear credible, they send images of fake IDs via applications such as WhatsApp or Viber.

Law enforcement officers emphasize that they never request money or banking details by phone or through messages and urge citizens not to respond to such requests. “Attention! Do not fall into the trap. Do not send money to unknown individuals and do not provide personal or banking data. Do not trust images or so-called ‘evidence’ received online,” the authorities warn.

Also, citizens are encouraged to verify information directly with official institutions and to notify the Police immediately if they receive such calls or suspicious messages.
