Ukraine and US hold high-level security talks in Miami to revive peace process

U.S. and Ukrainian officials concluded a second day of high-stakes diplomatic discussions in Miami on March 22, aimed at revitalizing a peace framework to end the ongoing war with Russia.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy characterized the talks as a vital sign of diplomatic momentum, specifically highlighting progress regarding upcoming prisoner exchanges. "This is a clear confirmation that diplomacy continues to function," Zelenskyy stated, expressing gratitude for American support in pursuing a "dignified peace."
The meeting comes at a critical juncture as negotiations have recently stagnated, largely due to shifting global attention toward escalating tensions involving Iran. Zelenskyy acknowledged that while Washington's focus remains divided, international pressure on Moscow must not waver.
Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, leading the American delegation, described the Saturday session as "constructive." Meanwhile, Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov confirmed that the teams focused on "key aspects and next steps" for a sustainable resolution.
Zelenskyy emphasized that any final agreement must include robust security guarantees for Ukraine and Europe to prevent future aggression. "It is essential that the aggressor is not rewarded for this war," he noted via Telegram, adding that a full report will follow the delegation’s return to Kyiv.
The diplomatic track had faced setbacks earlier this month, including the postponement of a March 5 summit in Abu Dhabi. Despite these challenges, the Miami talks signal a renewed effort by the U.S. to mediate key sticking points that have remained deadlocked for weeks.
