Ukrainian railway worker killed during emergency drone evacuation in Odessa

A Ukrainian railway conductor was killed and a passenger injured on Sunday, March 22, during a high-stakes emergency evacuation triggered by Russian drone threats near Odessa.
The tragedy occurred as passengers were deboarding a stationary train to seek cover. The conductor was struck by an oncoming train also maneuvering toward an evacuation zone, according to the national railway operator, Ukrzaliznytsia.
Critical risks under fire
"Evacuating passenger trains under drone threats saves lives, but involves critical risks if the slightest operational hazard occurs," Ukrzaliznytsia officials stated. Authorities have launched an investigation into the exact circumstances of the incident.
The passenger involved in the accident sustained moderate injuries and is currently receiving medical care. The identity of the deceased conductor has not been released pending family notification.
Systemic strikes on infrastructure
The same night, Russian forces targeted the Pridneprovsk railway line. A drone strike successfully hit and disabled a suburban locomotive, though no casualties were reported among the crew or passengers in that specific attack.
"It was a difficult night marked by drone strikes across the country," the company added, highlighting the immense pressure on the nation's transport corridors.
Odesa under constant siege
Odessa has faced escalating bombardment since the start of the year. On March 18, drone strikes wounded three civilians and damaged several residential buildings in the city’s historic center.
Regional military head Serhii Lysak confirmed that emergency crews continue to operate under high-risk conditions to repair critical infrastructure and provide aid to displaced residents.
