Maia Sandu in Bratislava: Ukraine’s resistance keeps Russia away from our borders
"Slovakia stands firmly with the Republic of Moldova, and Bratislava is committed to doing everything possible to help our country advance swiftly on the path to European Union membership. This message of support was conveyed at a high level during President Maia Sandu's official visit to Slovakia, which marked a new chapter in bilateral relations. During this visit, an Agreement on social protection was signed, enhancing economic and sectoral cooperation."

This agreement marks a significant achievement in the evolving relationship between Slovakia and the Republic of Moldova, with direct benefits for the citizens of both countries, stated Slovakia's President, Peter Pellegrini, following a meeting with Maia Sandu.
"This visit yields concrete results that will benefit citizens in both of our nations. An agreement on social security has been signed, which will recognize the work periods of Moldovan citizens in Slovakia within the pension system. Additionally, the business forum we are launching will enhance trade and facilitate the development of joint projects between our companies," Pellegrini announced during a joint press conference with Maia Sandu, the President of the Republic of Moldova.
Maia Sandu highlighted that the agreement, signed on March 26 by the Minister of Labor and Social Protection, Natalia Plugaru, and the State Secretary of the Ministry of Labor, Social Affairs, and Family of Slovakia, Marián Valentovič, ensures equal social guarantees for citizens and creates opportunities for expanding economic relations.
"We are signing an important agreement for Moldovan citizens living and working in Slovakia. They deserve the same social rights as citizens in their home country, and this document provides those rights. At the same time, we are strengthening economic cooperation; our exports to Slovakia increased by over 30% last year, and the potential for growth is substantial," said Maia Sandu.
Support for EU accession negotiations
The Slovak leader reaffirmed Bratislava's strong support for the Republic of Moldova's progress in EU accession negotiations, while cautioning against the risks of political delays.
"The integration of new member states into the European Union is a priority for us. The Republic of Moldova deserves to continue this process, and Slovakia backs the official opening and advancement of negotiations, including the closing of chapters. We must avoid any situation in which the process is artificially delayed or in which candidate countries are given false promises. Slovakia is on the side of the Republic of Moldova, supporting the enlargement of the European Union and doing everything possible to expedite Moldova’s progress in negotiations and work towards becoming an EU member in a few years," Pellegrini stated.
Maia Sandu emphasized that European integration is a strategic choice, and Chisinau's efforts are focused on implementing concrete reforms and enhancing security.
"We're not asking for favors; we seek to be evaluated based on our own efforts. We are reforming the judiciary, combating corruption, and aligning with European Union standards across all sectors. A Moldova integrated into the EU means a more secure eastern flank, and enlargement should not be viewed as an act of charity but as a strategic move," declared Maia Sandu.
The President also underscored the impact of the war in Ukraine on Moldova's security, stating that Kiev's resilience is crucial for the entire region's stability.
"For Moldova, Ukraine's resilience is essential. As long as Ukraine stands firm, it keeps Russia away from our borders. However, the aggression affects Moldova as well, including through attacks on energy infrastructure and contamination of water sources," Sandu explained.
Furthermore, Slovakia has provided concrete support to the Republic of Moldova through development projects and assistance during recent crises.
"We have supported numerous projects worth nearly 12 million euros and have recently offered technical and material assistance to address water contamination and the energy crisis. Slovakia also provides expertise, as we understand the challenges of the accession process," said Slovak President Peter Pellegrini.
We remind you that Maia Sandu's official visit to Bratislava also includes participation in a Moldovan-Slovak economic forum and the signing of agreements between the investment agencies and chambers of commerce of both countries, aimed at boosting economic cooperation and bilateral investments.
