Red alerts issued as extreme winter weather hits Central Europe

Authorities have issued red weather warnings across several European countries as an Arctic blast brings heavy snow, sleet, and violent winds to the continent. The highest alert levels are currently in effect for Croatia, Greece, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, and Italy.

Transport and infrastructure impact

In Italy, the Emilia Romagna region is facing significant disruptions to both road and rail networks due to heavy snowfall. In the neighbouring Liguria region, temperatures have plummeted alongside wind gusts exceeding 70 km/h.

Slovenia’s Pohorje Mountains recorded over 22 centimetres of fresh snow. Authorities there have maintained a red alert for the next 48 hours, warning of hurricane-force gusts reaching 140 km/h.

Casualties and forecast

Local emergency services reported several injuries caused by falling branches during the peak of the storm. In Croatia’s highland regions, heavy snow and blizzard conditions are expected to continue throughout the weekend.

Meteorologists warn that this extreme weather episode will persist for several days, advising international travellers to check for further cancellations.
