Moldova marks 108 years since historic union with Romania
The northern city of Bălți hosted a series of commemorative events on Friday to mark 108 years since Bessarabia united with Romania. Local authorities, academics, and residents gathered to highlight the importance of national values and historical memory.

The events served as a moment of reflection on shared identity and cultural ties. Marian-Alexandru Trifu, Romania’s acting consul in Bălți, described the celebration as an "act of memory" that reinforces the bonds of language and culture between the two regions.
Religious and educational leaders also emphasized the message of unity. Bishop Antonie of the Metropolis of Bessarabia stated that the lesson of the day is "unity," while history professor Nelea Chihai noted the event aims to develop national consciousness and patriotism.

The union was originally voted by the National Council (Sfatul Țării) in 1918, following the collapse of the Russian Empire. This historic move was the first step in the formation of Greater Romania, followed later that year by the unions of Bukovina and Transylvania.
Local participants expressed that the anniversary defines their past and guides their future. "It confirms that we have a history from which we still have much to learn," one resident noted during the ceremony.
