“Queen Maria and Chișinău” — a historically valuable exhibition opened at the National Museum of History of Moldova

An exhibition of historical and symbolic significance was inaugurated at the National Museum of History of Moldova. Titled "Queen Maria and Chișinău," it is part of a series of events commemorating the 108th anniversary of the Union of Bassarabia with Romania. The artworks are created by the artist couple Antonina and Vitalie Grișciuc.

The exhibition features a series of portraits of Queen Maria, created in both paintings and graphics by Antonina and Vitalie Grișciuc. It also showcases the emblematic buildings associated with the Queen's visit to Chișinău.

"During her visit in 1920, she attended two services at the 'Nativity of the Lord' Cathedral because it was Easter. The royal couple stayed in the homes of some local nobles," says painter Antonina Grișciuc.

"This exhibition largely tells the story of the locations visited by Queen Maria of Romania. While many of the original buildings have not been preserved, we have artistically and symbolically represented those that remain," explains painter Vitalie Grișciuc.

Antonina and Vitalie Grişciuc have not only engaged in creative work in the studio but have also conducted research on the city’s historical heritage.

They uncovered numerous buildings, including some that no longer exist, which are represented in their collection of works from a previous era. This exhibition not only serves as an extraordinary event in the realm of visual arts but also stands as a historical appeal to preserve our memory, particularly regarding Queen Maria, whom we should remember as a unifying figure. This sentiment is emphasized by Monica Babuc, the director of the Romanian Cultural Institute “Mihai Eminescu.”

The speakers at the event highlighted the symbolic significance of the works dedicated to Queen Maria and the historical importance of March 27, 1918, for all Romanians.

"For the second consecutive year, March 27 at the National Museum of History of Moldova is linked to the name of Queen Maria, marking our second exhibition opened on this day in her honor," said Olga Andronovici, the museum's deputy director.
