Moldova opposition leader urges diplomatic caution amid Russian drone airspace violations

Ion Chicu, chairman of the Party of Development and Consolidation of Moldova (PDCM) and member of the "Alternativa" parliamentary faction, has cautioned against the immediate expulsion of the Russian ambassador. Despite systemic violations of Moldovan airspace by Russian drones, Chicu advocates for a response rooted in national interest and international legal frameworks.

A call for strategic pragmatism

During an appearance on Moldova 1, Chicu emphasized that diplomatic decisions must not be driven by emotion. He noted that even major Western powers, including EU member states and the United States, have maintained diplomatic channels with Moscow despite the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

The former Prime Minister argued that any decision regarding the expulsion of top diplomats must be evaluated based on whether it effectively reduces pressure on the state or merely escalates existing tensions.

Mobilizing international oversight

Beyond bilateral measures, Chicu urged the Moldovan government to actively engage international organizations to address security concerns. He suggested that Chisinau should focus on generating global awareness regarding the specific difficulties Moldova faces as a neutral state on the periphery of the conflict.

The appeal comes following several incidents in March where Russian drones, targeting Ukrainian energy infrastructure, transited or crashed within Moldovan territory. While Chisinau has consistently condemned these violations, Chicu maintains that the state's response must remain "calculated" to ensure long-term stability.
