Ukraine reinforces western border with mines and armor on Transnistrian segment

The Ukrainian Armed Forces have significantly tightened security along the border with the breakaway Transnistrian region of Moldova. Kyiv announced an intensified military presence and the deployment of advanced defensive measures to secure the western frontier.
Starting March 25, 2026, engineering units from the Ukrainian Defense Forces, alongside the Mogilev-Podolsk border detachment, have begun extensively mining strategic sectors. These operations aim to deter potential security threats and enhance the country’s rapid response capabilities.
In addition to minefields, authorities are installing physical barriers, including high-efficiency "Egoza" razor-wire fences. To ensure continuous monitoring, the state border is now equipped with autonomous video surveillance and early-warning systems.
According to the "West" Operational Command, the fortification includes the deployment of additional mechanized infantry units. These troops, supported by armored vehicles, are positioned near the Transnistrian segment to bolster defensive readiness.
Ukrainian officials emphasized that these measures are part of a broader national effort to secure state borders. The strategic hardening comes in response to the evolving security challenges and regional volatility involving the unrecognized separatist territory.
