Hâncești farmers announce mass protests over agricultural crisis

Farmers have announced their intention to organize large-scale protests in response to the ongoing crisis severely impacting the agricultural sector. The "Forța Fermierilor" Association warns that farmers in the Republic of Moldova are facing significant challenges and is calling for urgent intervention. An open letter has been sent to President Maia Sandu and members of the Government, emphasizing the need for immediate action.

Farmers' representatives have announced that if the authorities do not take action by March 10, they will begin intensive preparations for protests, which may include nationwide demonstrations. However, they have decided not to use agricultural machinery, as they have in previous protests, due to high fuel prices that make mobilization challenging.

Vadim Ciobanu, president of the "Forța Fermierilor" Association, stated, “If there is no response from the government within five days, we will start preparing for more significant protests. It's not just the farmers from Hancesti; they serve as a benchmark for farmers across the republic. We have also held meetings in Leova, Cahul, and Fălești. We intend to conduct a peaceful protest; we are not violent, yet we are sometimes treated as the enemies of the people.”

We would like to remind you that representatives of the "Forța Fermierilor" Association requested urgent action from the Government on March 3. They asked for two main measures: first, to facilitate and organize the wholesale procurement of diesel fuel exclusively for the agricultural sector, and second, to resume the mechanism for reimbursing the excise duty on diesel fuel. According to the farmers, any further increase in diesel fuel prices could seriously jeopardize agricultural activities.
